Winter feeling on Vildmarksvägen
Today I continued along Vildmarksvägen and believe it or not but there have been breaks almost all day – even a few glimpses of sun. However, it really feels like winter is on its way. The temperature was around 3-5 degrees and most of the birches have already lost their leaves. A thin layer of fresh snow is visible on the mountain tops, which really reinforces the feeling that autumn is coming to an end.
I stopped at Gaustafallet, which is a beautiful, albeit not so big waterfall, where I was fascinated by the thundering power of the water.
After that I drove on towards Stekenjokk and just before the plateau is one of my favorite places. I stopped there and admired the magnificent view.
After that continued to the actual plateau in Stekenjokk where I fixed lunch. It is a popular place for motorhomes to spend the night, which I myself did one summer several years ago.
After lunch, I headed towards Fatmomakke church town, a place I had actually never visited before, even though I had driven Vildmarksvägen several times. It was about time and I was really taken by the fascinating environment and the magnificent surroundings with Marsfjället in the background. Fatmomakke church town is a historic place where Sami people and settlers have met to hold church services and celebrate church holidays for several centuries. The church town dates back to the 18th century and consists of a large number of cabins and cottages that the Sami and settlers built and used as temporary housing during the church holidays. Several of the cabins are today owned by private individuals and are still used as holiday homes on special occasions. It was a magical experience to walk among these buildings and feel the wings of history.
It was such a peaceful environment that I decided to stay the night. But a moment later another motor home appeared, this time with a trailer that looked like a horse transport. "Strange to take a horse on holiday" I thought but why not? Some Germans tend to drag half their household with them. Soon I understood that it wasn't a horse they had with them – out jumped a dog... and then another... and a few more from the camper's garage. After that, the trailer door opened and more dogs poured out. I think I counted 12! It will be exciting to see how much scolding I get tonight. 😉
